You know what? This post, we’re not doing 6 picks. We’re going to do as many picks as we like because, damn it, this year we want to do things our way. We’re feeling empowered, and hopeful, and motivated, and straight-up ready to crush it in 2021!

Here’s what we’re feeling for this year:

“My hopes for the industry are to see some serious earmarked funds for independent restaurants. Also, it would be fun to see innovative uses of digital menus and QR code technology, to bring back some of sit-down personality that we’ve had to forgo. Truthfully, there’s nothing that will compare to finally sitting down at a wine bar again…

Personally, I’m hoping to master some new photography tricks, as well as studying up on typography.

Non-work related, I’m determined to find some new music. Spent far too much time sitting in silence last year!”

“For me, I’d like to see the return of common sense in activism. 2020 social media has shown that cancel culture is out of line. It feels like, for some odd reason, the straightforward answer and logic to things feels unattractive to many. To the point where opposing opinions are seen as insults. #cancelcancelculture.”

“Humanity. Not on some grandiose Bill Gates philanthropic scale (thanks Bill for handling that). I’m looking forward to a boost in kindness and care for the people that are right there next to us.  Looking out for our neighbors, our friends, family, and land. This year is going to be about doing right by the people and things you love.”

“Try to unplug! Learn to make some sacred time for myself. Not only for me, but I want to show up and be present in the best possible way for the people and the communities who need it the most. It’s a time for self-renewal.”

“Build a better restaurant industry. The impact on the restaurant industry from the pandemic can’t be overstated, and I can’t wait for it to be safe to return to dining – safe for everyone. Restaurants are our gathering places, our community centers, and I personally just want to sit at a table with my friends again.

But we know that the restaurant industry will look different on the other side. Worst case scenario, we find ourselves with nothing but giant chain restaurants, and the hidden gems and family-owned restaurants are over. Best case scenario, we rebuild an industry that is more equitable, more open and more fair. The past few years have highlighted some of the systemic issues that undermine our favorite industry, and the pandemic has laid bare the fragility of the system as a whole.
We all share some responsibility for rebuilding an industry that’s more equitable. Support restaurants that make commitments to causes you believe in. Stop complaining about service charges or menu prices; restaurateurs can’t pay more without charging more. And support laws and initiatives that make the industry and the workforce stronger. The alternative is endless breadsticks.”
